Rely On God’s Guidance When Your Life Gets Hard
Life’s hard seasons seldom announce themselves politely. David pleaded for God’s intervention and guidance in a moment when darkness felt so close it choked his hope.
Come quickly, Lord, and answer me, for my depression deepens. Don’t turn away from me, or I will die. Psalm 143:7
Did you ever feel that way? A time when unexpected grief, strained relationships, or financial pressures left your heart trembling. Maybe spiritual dryness made it feel like you were all alone.
When life tightens up around you, and you need guidance, but you think God’s abandoned you. Then the enemy whispers that God has abandoned you and asks, What will you do now?
David found himself in a similar situation, but he knew God didn’t desert him. The way he prayed earlier, he sent out a reminder, maybe for God or maybe for himself. But he prayed;
- I am losing all hope; I am paralyzed with fear.
- I remember the days of old.
- Plus, I ponder all your great works and think about what you have done.
- I lift my hands to you in prayer. I thirst for you as parched land thirsts for rain. Psalm 143:4-6

Then, after he prayed those words, the Bible says “Interlude.” It’s like David took a deep breath and then cried out, “Come quickly, Lord, and answer me, for my depression deepens.”
His prayer sounded raw and unfiltered, and in a tone of desperation. His words, however, give a pattern for anyone who walks through a deep struggle needing God’s guidance.
David refused to hide the condition of his heart. In other words, in his emotional heaviness, he unapologetically reached toward God as he stepped away from self-reliance.
Seek God’s Guidance
When life gets hard, honest prayer often marks the first step back toward clarity and strength. David’s urgency acknowledged his limits while declaring God’s sufficiency. He continued.
Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you. Psalm 143:8
David anchored himself in God’s proven character. Unfailing love does not shift with emotions, circumstances, or the behavior of the people around us. It holds steady, even when we collapse.
He didn’t search for a temporary emotional lift; he sought the steady truth that renews the soul. With fear pressing in, God’s faithfulness cleared his mind, and guidance strengthened his steps.
David didn’t have a GPS or a map, so he looked to heaven and asked, “Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.” He acknowledged his need for divine direction.
Hard seasons will often blur our vision. Because the stakes felt high, David refused to rely solely on his instincts. Instead, he surrendered his path to God and invited His leadership.
If you need God’s guidance, then know that He guides the humble. Often times we don’t see the big picture as God reveals each step to us. He, though, delights in directing our steps.
The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Psalm 37:23

Run towards the Lord
Rescue me from my enemies, Lord; I run to you to hide me. Psalm 143:9
The pressures surrounding David pursued him relentlessly, yet he chose the right refuge. He didn’t run toward the distraction of the enemy. No, he ran toward God.
The safest place for a weary soul rests under God’s covering and guidance. Hardships may continue, but when God rescues us from our enemies, our hearts grow guarded by His presence.
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing. Psalm 143:10
Notice the direction of David’s desire. He prayed for obedience, not escape. He longed for God’s will and asked that the Spirit of God give him guidance, not simply relief.
When hardship hits, obedience to God’s Word keeps us grounded. God’s Spirit steadies our steps and strengthens our courage. His Spirit creates maturity through each of our challenges.
Look how this Psalm ended. David called on God’s righteousness and faithful love to silence his enemies and revive his life.
- For the glory of your name, O Lord, preserve my life.
- Because of your faithfulness, bring me out of this distress.
- In your unfailing love, silence all my enemies and destroy all my foes, for I am your servant. Psalm 143:11-12
He didn’t claim that his strength came from his own merit. He leaned entirely on God. David trusted God’s defense, restoration, and guidance, and we must too.
When we do, we align ourselves with God’s nature. So when hard times come, they don’t overshadow God’s character. In fact, those hard times often reveal it more clearly.

A Powerful Truth
This portion of Psalm 143 teaches us a powerful truth. When life gets hard, God stands ready to guide, protect, and strengthen us. He invites us to seek Him and lean on His unfailing love.
And through God’s guidance system, follow His leadership one step at a time. Our circumstances may challenge us, our trials may linger, but God’s direction never falters.

Life Application of Relying on God’s Guidance
- Pray with honesty, not pretense. Bring your pain and confusion directly to God. Transparent prayer clears space for divine comfort and direction.
- Anchor your emotions in God’s unfailing love. Let Scripture remind you of His character each morning. His love stabilizes the heart when circumstances shift.
- Commit your next step, not your entire roadmap, to God’s guidance. Ask Him where to walk today. Trust that obedience to small steps will lead to long-term clarity.
- Run to God as your refuge, not to unhealthy escapes. Seek His presence through worship, Scripture, and quiet surrender. Let Him guard your thoughts and emotions.
- Commit yourself to obedience, even while waiting for a breakthrough. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you God’s will. Follow His prompting with courage and humility.
Lord, help us to rely on your guidance every day. Especially, Lord, when hard times try to knock us off our feet.
