Who Was Chuck Smith? His Life, Ministry, & Jesus Revolution Role

    Who Was Chuck Smith?

Ever since the Jesus Revolution film was released, I’ve been asked again and again about an extraordinary man and pastor I was privileged to know personally—Chuck Smith. God used him to spark what would later be called the Jesus Movement, or Jesus Revolution, a genuine revival that transformed a generation.

    Chuck Smith’s Early Life

Chuck’s story began long before Calvary Chapel filled with hippies carrying Bibles. His life was steeped in Scripture from childhood.

His mother, after witnessing her daughter Virginia’s miraculous healing, dedicated herself and her son, Chuck, to the Lord.

Chuck grew up on the word of God with his mother teaching him to read at just the age of four and helping him memorize Scripture. The Smith family also attended church multiple times a week. But at age 14, at a church in Ventura, something happened where he encountered the Lord in a new way.

That moment came on a Sunday night. His family had returned from a vacation, and while his parents decided to stay home, Chuck chose to go to church on his own. Sitting with friends in the service, he felt the Lord speak to his heart as the pastor gave the invitation for people to go forward, and he went alone.

“ God really got hold of my heart that night. . .  I found myself just shaking really with the presence of God in my life,” Chuck shared with me in our interview.

That night, he made a personal and decisive commitment to Jesus Christ.

How Chuck Smith Received His Call to Ministry

After that defining moment, Chuck’s faith continued to grow—but his path to ministry wasn’t immediate or obvious. In fact, Chuck originally planned to become a doctor.

Everything changed during a summer youth camp that Chuck almost skipped. While there, a speaker shared: “You have only one life. It will soon be passed. Only what’s done for Christ will last.”

Those words stayed with Chuck. Later that day, sitting alone under a pine tree with his Bible, he sensed the Lord speaking clearly. He realized that while he could help people temporarily as a doctor, God was calling him to help people eternally through the gospel.

How Calvary Chapel Became the Center of the Jesus Revolution

When Chuck Smith accepted the call to pastor a small church in Costa Mesa called Calvary Chapel, he had no idea God was about to launch a movement.

I think Kay Smith, Chuck’s wife, is actually the unsung hero of the Jesus Movement. Kay felt a burden for the young hippies in the area that were consuming drugs and felt they needed to help them.

And though Chuck initially resisted, God soon connected Chuck with Lonnie Frisbee, a charismatic, hippie-evangelist who brought the young hippies into Calvary Chapel.

By around 1970, the church had outgrown its small building on Church Street in Costa Mesa. And by 1972, critics were saying the Jesus Movement was over—but in reality, it was just beginning.

What began at Chuck Smith’s Calvary Chapel had a ripple effect. As people came to faith, many felt called to serve the Lord. They began small Bible studies, which grew into churches, which grew into big churches. . .

    Advice From Chuck Smith

In the closing of our last interview together, Chuck Smith spoke some encouragement for us all:

“ We are living in a rapidly changing world. We don’t know what tomorrow’s going to bring forth. . .  The important thing is that we hold on to an unchanging Christ . . . Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. And when you’re living in uncertain kind of conditions, it’s just important that you have an anchor that doesn’t change. . .  Just hold on to our unchanging Christ.”
