What Does it Mean to be Born Again?

What does it mean to be born again? According to the Bible, being born again is a supernatural act of God in which He brings a spiritually dead sinner to life through the power of the Holy Spirit. In John 3, Jesus tells Nicodemus that unless a person is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

But what does that truly mean? Is being born again simply making a decision for Christ? Is it an emotional religious experience? Or is it something far deeper?

Drawing from Scripture and the faithful teaching of John MacArthur and R. C. Sproul, we will examine the biblical meaning of the new birth, why it is necessary, and how it transforms a person completely.

Where Does the Phrase “Born Again” Come From?

The phrase born again comes directly from John 3, where Jesus speaks with Nicodemus — a Pharisee and respected religious leader.

    Jesus tells him:

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)

Nicodemus was not irreligious. He knew Scripture. He practiced discipline. He held a position of authority. Yet Jesus tells him he lacks something essential: spiritual life.

This immediately shows us something critical:

Being born again is not about becoming more religious.
It is about becoming spiritually alive.

Why Must a Person Be Born Again?

To understand what it means to be born again, we must first understand the human condition.

The Bible Says We Are Spiritually Dead

Ephesians 2:1 states, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins.”

According to Sproul, this verse destroys the idea that people are merely spiritually weak or morally imperfect. The problem is far more serious. We are not spiritually sick — we are spiritually dead.

Dead people do not revive themselves.
Dead people do not cooperate in their resurrection.

    They must be made alive.

MacArthur consistently teaches that total depravity does not mean every person is as sinful as possible. It means that sin affects every part of our being — mind, will, emotions, and desires. Left to ourselves, we do not seek God (Romans 3:11). We resist Him.

If that is true, then salvation cannot begin with human effort. It must begin with God.

    That beginning is called regeneration.

What Is Regeneration in the Bible?

Regeneration is the theological term for being born again. It literally means “to be made alive.”

    In Ezekiel 36:26, God promises:

“I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”

Notice the emphasis: I will remove. I will give.

This is not self-reformation. It is divine transformation.

Regeneration Is a Sovereign Act of God

Sproul described regeneration as the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit in which the disposition of the soul is changed. God does not simply invite the sinner to improve. He changes the sinner’s heart.

MacArthur emphasizes that regeneration is monergistic — meaning God alone accomplishes it. It is not a cooperative effort between human will and divine grace.

The sinner does not initiate the new birth.
The sinner does not assist the new birth.
The sinner receives the new birth.

This protects the truth that salvation is entirely by grace.

Does Faith Come Before or After the New Birth?

One of the most important theological questions surrounding the meaning of being born again is this:

Does a person believe first and then become born again?
Or does God cause the new birth, resulting in faith?

According to the teaching of both MacArthur and Sproul, regeneration logically precedes faith.

A spiritually dead heart cannot produce saving faith. God must first grant life. Once the heart is made alive, faith flows naturally from it.

Ephesians 2:8–9 reminds us that salvation is the gift of God — not a result of works. Even our believing is enabled by grace.

This humbles us deeply. It removes all boasting. It reminds us that if we are saved, it is because God acted first.

How Does Jesus Describe Being Born Again?

    In John 3:8, Jesus says:

“The wind blows where it wishes… So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

The Spirit’s work is sovereign and mysterious, like the wind. We cannot control it. We cannot manufacture it. But we can see its effects.

    The new birth is not:

    • An emotional moment
    • A repeated prayer
    • A church ritual
    • A moral improvement plan

It is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit bringing life where there was none.

What Are the Signs of Being Born Again?

If regeneration is invisible, how do we know if it has happened?

    The Bible gives evidence.

    1. Genuine Repentance

There is sorrow over sin — not merely consequences, but the offense against God Himself.

    2. Faith in Christ Alone

Trust shifts away from self-righteousness and rests fully in Jesus Christ — His life, death, and resurrection.

    3. Love for God’s Word

Scripture becomes nourishment rather than obligation.

    4. A Pattern of Obedience

Not perfection, but a new direction. The overall trajectory of life changes.

    5. Perseverance in Faith

Those truly born again continue trusting Christ. They may struggle, but they do not permanently abandon Him.

MacArthur frequently warns against easy-believism — the idea that one can pray a prayer and live unchanged. Sproul similarly cautioned that profession without transformation is not biblical salvation.

    Being born again produces fruit.

Can Someone Be Religious and Not Born Again?

    Yes.

    Nicodemus proves it.

Church attendance does not equal regeneration.
Christian vocabulary does not equal new birth.
Moral living does not equal salvation.

Jesus did not tell Nicodemus to try harder. He told him he must be born again.

The difference between religion and regeneration is the difference between external behavior and internal transformation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Being Born Again

What does it mean to be born again in John 3?

It means to be spiritually regenerated by the Holy Spirit — to be brought from spiritual death to spiritual life by God’s sovereign grace.

How does someone become born again?

According to Scripture, the Holy Spirit sovereignly grants new life, resulting in repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

Is being born again the same as baptism?

No. Baptism is an outward sign. Regeneration is an inward work of the Spirit.

Can you lose being born again?

No. If regeneration is truly God’s sovereign act, it results in perseverance. Those genuinely born again will continue in faith.

Why the New Birth Matters for Eternity

Jesus said that unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

That means morality is not enough.
    Good intentions are not enough.
    Religious heritage is not enough.

The problem is not that we need better habits. The problem is that we need new hearts.

The glory of the gospel is that God does what we cannot. He raises the spiritually dead. He replaces hearts of stone. He awakens faith.

    When someone is born again:

    • Christ becomes precious.
    • Sin becomes grievous.
    • Obedience becomes desirable.
    • God becomes glorious.

Salvation shifts from duty to delight.

Final Reflection: Has God Made You New?

    The question is not:

“Did I pray a prayer once?”

    The question is:

    “Has God changed my heart?”

    Do you trust Christ alone?
    Do you grieve over sin?
    Do you desire to obey?

These are evidences of grace — not grounds for pride.

If you see genuine spiritual life in your soul, give glory to God. He is the One who gives life.

Life is a vapor. Eternity is forever.
And the new birth is the doorway into everlasting joy in Christ.
