Shout To The Lord And Sing For Joy!

Shout to the Lord, all the earth; break out in praise and sing for joy! Psalm 98:4

I love it when the Holy Spirit comes over me, giving me the urge to shout to the Lord. But, I’ve experienced other times, as you probably have, when I didn’t feel like shouting to Him at all.

Life rarely flows in perfect harmony. Some days stretch us with heaviness. Obstacles pile up on us, close relationships seem strained, and the weight of fatigue presses hard on us.

On those days, even the smallest frustrations feel magnified. Be it a broken appliance, a missed appointment, or a gust of wind on a bad hair day. Other days, though, we feel light and full.

Laughter comes easily, work flows smoothly, and blessings seem visible everywhere. Psalm 98 meets us in both places. Whether weighed down or lifted up, this Psalm calls us to lift our voices.

It reminds us that worship transforms perspective. Singing praise to the Lord shifts our focus from our problems to His power. And instead of shouting at, we shout to, our Creator and Lord.

The Psalmist began with a call for a fresh song to erupt from fresh encounters with God’s grace. Each day offers new reasons to praise Him. His works never grow stale, so sing a new song.

Sing to the Lord a New Song

Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done wonderful deeds. His right hand has won a mighty victory; his holy arm has shown his saving power! Psalm 98:1

When our grandchildren were very young, my wife had a unique gift of making up personalized  songs for them. As she held them on her lap, the words and melodies would flow out.

She sang about their names, their toys, or funny things they did. They giggled and listened because the songs celebrated them. Their faces lit up as they intently listened to her.

Similarly, the Psalmist urges us to create songs that celebrate the Lord’s deeds. Not recycled words offered without thought, but heartfelt, Spirit-led praise springing from gratitude.

God’s wonderful deeds call for a personal response. His right hand secures victories in our lives. His holy arm reveals His saving power. Those words bring this scripture close to our hearts.

If you feel a heaviness today, reread that verse. Think about His wonderful deeds, His right hand, and His arm. Victory belongs to the Lord, and you can shout about that.

The Psalmist didn’t stop at personal praise. He said that all the earth should shout to the Lord. And we can join with its praise and songs of joy. The Psalmist included a joyful symphony.

Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and melodious song, with trumpets and the sound of the ram’s horn. Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the King! Psalm 98:5-6

Imagine a grand orchestra of strings, brass, percussion, and woodwinds weaving together a masterpiece. Worship works in the same way. It produces a sound that honors His greatness.

    Shout to the Lord

    Creation Joins the Chorus

Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise! Let the earth and all living things join in. Also let the rivers clap their hands in glee! Let the hills sing out their songs of joy before the Lord, Psalm 98:7-9

The Psalmist widens the scope again. Praise does not belong to humans alone. Creation itself responds to God’s rule as its inhabitants shout to and praise the Lord.

Scientists have recorded astonishing underwater sounds—from the deep calls of whales to the rapid clicks of shrimp. The pistol shrimp quickly snaps its claw, creating bubbles that burst.

It happens so fast with a sound loud enough it stuns prey. If a tiny shrimp can fill the ocean with noise, how much greater will the symphony sound when every creature lifts its voice?

Rivers clap as they rush toward oceans. Hills echo melodies as the wind moves across their slopes. The Psalmist painted a picture of creation alive, offering its praise to the Creator.

When you walk through a forest, sit by a river, or stand on a mountain, listen closely. The choir is already rehearsing. Join them with a joyful noise as you shout your praises to the Lord.

The Psalmist anticipated the Almighty Judge and King coming to the earth. All creation on earth and throughout the heavens know of His coming. This Psalm ends with a reminder for us.

He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with justice, and the nations with fairness. Psalm 98:9,

Praise swells not only because of what God has done but because of what He will do. The King will return to set things right. Justice will reign. Wrong will end. Fairness will prevail.

    Shout to the Lord

Christ Our Lord, Our Shout of Victory

For those in Christ, judgment brings hope, not fear. Jesus took our guilt on the cross. His righteousness covers us. We shout for joy because our Lord the King rules with mercy and truth.

Christ fulfilled this Psalm with His arrival. When Jesus our Lord entered Jerusalem, the crowds began to shout. They waved palm branches and sang songs of praise.

When He rose from the grave, the earth quaked in triumph. Revelation envisions the day when people from every tribe and nation sing a new song to the Lamb.

Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders. And they sang in a mighty chorus: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered—to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.” Revelation 5:11-12

Our worship now echoes that future reality. Each time we shout, sing, or whisper praise to the Lord, we join heaven’s choir. Christ, our victory, composes the melody.

His Spirit enables us to keep singing even in sorrow and shout to the Lord even in our despair. His promises assure us that joy will outlast our suffering.

We can easily live out this Psalm when our day runs smoothly. But how can we live the truth of this Psalm on the days filled with heaviness or despair? Follow the application below.
