We Seek New Jerusalem

Jesus was crucified “outside the gate” of Jerusalem to sanctify all His people by shedding His own blood (Heb. 13:12). The next verse says, “Let us therefore go forth unto Him outside the camp…” This is to turn our hearts to Him, looking to Him, not being constrained by any outward forms or rituals.New Jerusalem

Then verse 13:14 continues, “For we do not have here a remaining city, but we seek after the one to come.” Whatever house or apartment we live in and whichever city we are in, that is not our long-term residence. Our hearts seek the city to come, New Jerusalem.

We do not just wait for New Jerusalem but we seek it. This was exemplified on the day of resurrection—most disciples stayed in their dwelling but a few went out seeking Jesus (as in Mark 16:1-6). Our current spiritual seeking includes being in God’s Word, calling on the name of the Lord, prayer, singing, fellowship with believers, and announcing the gospel.

While seeking New Jerusalem we also praise God as Hebrews 13:15 encourages, “let us offer up a sacrifice of praise continually to God, that is, the fruit of lips confessing His name.” The more we praise God, the more our hearts are turned from other things to Him. Praise Him!
