Unlimited: There’s No Loss in Following Jesus

Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospelwill fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first” (Mark 10:28–31, NIV).

The disciples were worried. If a most respectable man like the rich young ruler can’t enter eternal life, then what hope do they have?

As usual, Peter was the one who spoke on behalf of the rest.

Jesus just asked a rich man to leave everything he had and to follow him. That’s why Peter says to Jesus, “We have left everything to follow you.”

Jesus’ answer is a powerful one. He assures the disciples that there will never be any loss in following him.

He says that whatever apparent value anyone leaves behind to follow him will be repaid a hundred times in this present age. And then you shouldn’t miss what he adds. He says, “along with persecutions.”

In other words, anyone who chooses to follow Jesus can expect hardship and persecutions in this life. But the way in which his life will be enriched here and now will far exceed the cost.

And that’s not the end of the rewards, according to Jesus. He says that in the age to come we will also inherit eternal life.

Jesus ends with the saying, “But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

What he means is that many who seem to be first in this world will not inherit eternal life, but many of those who seem to be the least will inherit the kingdom.

What is seen today is not what will be seen in the coming kingdom.

Eli’s Reflection: My invitation to you is to make some time today to pray for more faith and for spiritual eyesight, in order to trust Jesus more and follow him. He is at work in you.
