The Triune God’s Operation to Bring Us into New Jerusalem, 2

The Triune God as our entrance into New Jerusalem is displayed in parables in Luke 15. These parables correspond with 1 Peter 1:2, “Chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father in the sanctification of the Spirit unto the obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.”

First Peter 1:2 shows us the energetic working of the Divine Trinity—the Father’s choosing in eternity past and the Spirit’s seeking sanctification in time so that the chosen ones might be convicted to obey the gospel by repenting unto God and receiving Christ as their life. This once more reveals the Triune God as the entrance into Himself, which is the entrance into the holy city. The Triune God is the holy city, yet not the Triune God alone but the Triune God united, mingled, and incorporated with His chosen and redeemed people.*

First Peter 1:3-4 continue, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us unto a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance, incorruptible and undefiled and unfading, kept in the heavens for you.”

Verse 3 shows that our regeneration is the result of the operation of the Triune God presented in verse 2. Verse 4 declares that this brings us unto New Jerusalem—our inheritance, an incorruptible, undefiled, unfading city which John saw “coming down out of heaven from God” (Rev. 21:2).
