The River of Water of Life in the Bible (3)

Two more Psalms also show us aspects of the water of life. Psalm 46:4 says, “There is a river whose streams gladden the city of God.” When written this must have referred to earthly Jerusalem but eternally it is definitely about New Jerusalem. The river from the throne will gladden the entire city. New Jerusalem

Psalm 65:9 proclaims, “You visit the earth and water it; You enrich it greatly: the river of God is full of water.” In the New Testament the river of God is the Spirit, enriching the believers with “the unsearchable riches of Christ” (Eph. 3:8). This is for now and for New Jerusalem.

In Isaiah 12:2-3 the prophet declares, “God is now my salvation; I will trust and not dread;…therefore you will draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation.” Today we have God’s salvation; He has become our trust. Outward situations are not good, not encouraging, but God will fulfill all His promises to us.

While we are awaiting God’s full salvation we can rejoice and draw water for our spiritual drinking. This matches the exhortation in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” Let us now seize and practice this foretaste of New Jerusalem.
