How to Find Actual Spiritual Truth (by Cathe Laurie)
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away” (Matthew 24:35 ESV).
Have you ever stretched out on a blanket and watched the clouds, picking out shapes as they moved across the sky?
If you lie there for a while, you’ll see the clouds shift. Where you saw an elephant before, now you see a lion. Where you might have seen a flower, now a fun smiley face stares down at you. The clouds are ever-moving, ever-changing, always adjusting as the wind blows them.
The clouds are not solid beings. If you stare at a mountain, you will not see it change. But clouds? They’re here one minute and gone the next!
Our Spiritual Views Shouldn’t Be Ever-Changing
So many Christians hold views about God, about Christ, about right and wrong, about salvation and Heaven and Hell. But they hold them like clouds in their heads, not mountains in their lives.
If you ask them about these things, they tell you their “cloud truth.” To them, it’s a solid shape. But when some resistance or opposing wind comes, it blows them away. Their thoughts about these things vanish until a new cloud, a new trend, or a new teaching takes its place.
Scripture Directs Us to Spiritual Truths
Scripture is not just an intellectual or emotional belief. It is meant to be like a mountain in our lives—strong, dependable, unchanging.
“Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens” (Psalm 119:89 ESV).
“Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him” (Proverbs 30:5 ESV).
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away” (Matthew 24:35 ESV).
The Word of God is unchanging and unmoving. It is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. There’s no changing the truth of who God is and what He says.
Scripture Should Be Interwoven Into All Areas of Your Life
In weaving fabric, there are two directions for the threads to go. “Warp” refers to the lengthwise threads, and “woof” or “weft” refers to the crosswise threads. These threads are both essential elements, interlocking with each other to build a fabric that is strong and durable.
Scripture should be the “warp and woof” of the fabric of our lives, an intricate blend of truth and reality that forms the base of how we live.
How to Ground Yourself in God’s Truth
So, how do we change our clouds to mountains? We study! We learn! We surround ourselves with other believers who can help us understand the truth of Scripture. We find Bible studies and prayer guides and immerse ourselves in seeking God and all His wisdom.
When we ask the Lord for guidance, He will answer. But we must come to Him humble and eager to learn, willing to lay down our own ways to see and hear Him clearly.
Let’s not be believers who exist on “cloud truths”—always changing, always adjusting, always chasing after the next trendy thought. Let us instead stand on the truth of God’s Word and live our lives as He intends!
