The New Jerusalem—A Corporate Person

In Revelation 21:2 the apostle John tells us, “I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” And in verses 9-10 an angel said to John, “Come here; I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. New JerusalemAnd he carried me away in spirit onto a great and high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.”

These two portions clearly present to us that New Jerusalem is a person, the bride, the wife of the redeeming Lamb Jesus Christ. New Jerusalem is absolutely not a physical city!

This post begins a series with excepts from a book by Ed Marks titled The New Jerusalem—A Corporate Person*. The text of this book begins:

In interpreting the New Jerusalem, we must take care of the key, the governing principle, for interpretin the book of Revelation. This key is in the first verse: “The revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave to Him to show to His slaves the things that must quickly take place; and He made it known by signs, sending it by His angel to His slave John.” …Revelation is a book of signs. Signs are symbols with spiritual significance.

There are many signs in Revelation. Jesus Christ is symbolized by a Lion and by a Lamb. The churches are presented as golden lampstands. Evil persons are described as various kinds of beasts. New Jerusalem is also a sign and it is “the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
