Thanksgiving on the Way to New Jerusalem (2)
Our Christian life is our pathway to New Jerusalem. One part of walking this path is “giving thanks at all times for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to our God and Father.”
Similarly, Colossians 2:6-7 encourages us “As therefore you have received the Christ, Jesus the Lord, walk in Him, having been rooted and being built up in Him, and being established in the faith even as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” The supply for our walk is Christ, not our resolutions nor our determinations.
We have been rooted in Christ. As a plant absorbs nutrition by its roots, we absorb from this rooting in Christ. This supply establishes us in the faith and causes us to abound in thanksgiving.
This supply often comes through the Lord’s word, especially as the printed words in the Bible become the living words in spirit. Colossians 3:16-17 couples the word with thanksgiving, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom…singing with grace in your hearts to God. And whatever you do in word or in deed, do all things in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
As in Ephesians 5, this portion also includes our singing. We can sing songs we know or sing verses and thanksgivings freely to the Father, making up the tune as we sing. This is part of our preparation for New Jerusalem.
