Spiritual Eating in New Jerusalem
The Bible presents a good view of our spiritual eating on our path to New Jerusalem. The center of that holy city is “the throne of God and of the Lamb” (Rev. 22:1), out from which flows “a river of water of life, bright as crystal.”
Revelation 22:2 tells us “on this side and on that side of the river was the tree of life, producing twelve fruits, yielding its fruit each month.” Based on John 7:37-39 we see that the river is the Spirit. Then what is the tree? Since the tree grows along the river, it must be a vine rather than a narrow, tall fir tree. At the beginning of John 15 the Lord told us, “I am the true vine.” And in John 6 He said that He is the true food.
With the view of John 6 and 7 we see that Jesus Christ is the real tree of life! He is our spiritual nourishment in New Jerusalem. He is our eternal, complete, and perfect supply, indicated by the “twelve fruits,” twelve signifying eternal perfection. (This is why New Jerusalem is full of twelves: twelve gates with twelve angels, twelve foundations with twelve names, twelve kinds of precious stones, and a measurement of twelve thousand stadia.)
In summary, Jesus Christ is our spiritual nourishment today and He will be much more in New Jerusalem.
