Seeing God in the Majestic and Miniature

I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works. Psalm‬ ‭145‬:‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Sit at the edge of the Grand Canyon and try to find words to describe the view.

Watch a sunset in Hawaii…ski down a snowy slope in the Rockies…cruise into volcanic fjords of Iceland…or hike past Appalachian overlooks. There are no adequate words to praise God’s divine majesty when His greatness is overwhelming. Most of the time, only “wow” will do.

As an amateur photographer (with the stress on “amateur”), I’m addicted to snapping pics of God’s gorgeous scenery around the world. I’ll take a hundred photos from one trail angle, turn the corner, and start taking a hundred more.

The magnificence of the Swiss Alps

But equally rewarding are the scenic moments I stumble across at my feet. These are often fairy-size gardens that catch my eye, smaller than a slice of bread. Or a bug that skitters across a leaf. Or a single sprout emerging through crusty soil.

God speaks to me loudly in the big vistas. But He also speaks volumes in these teeny-tiny photo ops. I hear Him commanding me to observe His extraordinary genius in making all things beautiful, whether colossal or microscopic.

Then, He shares more. In these moments, I hear God’s sweet whispers…telling me to trust Him with all of my burdens. Big and small.

He reminds me that He is a vast, infinite God who is involved in the intricate details of life. From the myriad spheres in space to the microscopic cells in our bodies, God’s design is in every detail. That includes maintaining each breath, heartbeat, and moment of my life.

Friend, take note when God shows you a profoundly beautiful thunderhead cloud in the sky, a deep green river gorge, or a craggy mountain peak. Let Him assure you of the greatness of His power to take care of you. Then, look as well for the small ways He sends you His grace…in a flower poking through pavement, a spiderweb covered in dew, or a fern patch at the base of a tree. Be assured He is ready to hear your biggest and tiniest concerns.

Let’s keep our eyes open this week for His colorful masterpieces in nature. I pray they will bring you and me His joy, comfort, and peace…and inspire us to praise and trust Him in everything. Big and small.

O God of all wonders and majesty, may I be awed by Your beauty at every turn. Remind me of Your complete sovereignty over my life. Let me be assured of Your grace to me in every flower or mountain I see. Help me trust You with everything in my life. In praise of Jesus’ name, Amen.
