Our Journey Through the Scriptures – Genesis 3:15
Jun 26, 2026 290
Two days ago, we stood on the road to Emmaus — today our journey through the Scriptures takes us right back to the beginning, into humanity’s darkest hour, where the very first promise of Christ was already waiting.
“And I will make enemies
Of you and the woman,
And of your offspring and her Descendant;
He shall bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise Him on the heel.” — Genesis 3:15 (NASB)

Over the past two days, we have reflected on the road to Emmaus, where Jesus Christ opened the Scriptures to His discouraged disciples and caused their hearts to burn within them. Today, we begin tracing that same story through the Scriptures ourselves.
We know that Jesus took those disciples to the writings of Moses, which include the book of Genesis. Genesis chapter 3 is a tragic chapter in which sin enters the world and humanity comes under the sentence of death: “For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.” Yet even here, in the midst of humanity’s fall, God gives a glimmer of hope.
In verse 15, we read of the conflict between the ancient serpent, Satan, and the Descendant of Eve — Jesus Christ. Satan would bruise His heel, pointing forward to Christ’s suffering and crucifixion. But Christ would crush the serpent’s head through His death and resurrection.
This verse is often called the protoevangelium, meaning “the first good news,” because it contains the first prophetic hint of the gospel in Scripture. From the very beginning, God revealed His plan to rescue humanity through His Son.
What appeared to be Satan’s victory at the cross became his defeat. Through His suffering, death and resurrection, Jesus broke the power of sin and death. Because of Him, all who call upon His name may receive eternal life.
No wonder the hearts of the Emmaus disciples burned within them as Jesus opened the Scriptures. They discovered that the storyline of Scripture had always been about Jesus — the One who would rescue us from sin and death and bring us into eternal life with Him.
The Good News Is…
And the good news is, as we journey through the Scriptures ourselves, the light of Christ will shine more brightly before us, leading us safely all the way to our eternal home.
