God Speaks to Us Through Scripture

“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart,” (Romans 10:8 NKJV).

Have you ever seen a child at an ocean shore? Watching giant waves roll in, they’ll cling to their parent’s hand like their life depends on it. As a parent, we know we’re always there watching over them, even if we’re not holding their hand. But for our little ones, the hand is a lifeline. And only when they feel secure enough do they feel safe letting go and diving in to play in the surf.

In our relationship with the Lord, we can be just like that little child. We need His hand to cling onto. If we don’t feel His hand in ours, if we are not locked in securely to His presence beside us, we can feel overwhelmed with fear and anxiety, staring at the giant waves of life rolling toward us.

    Where God Speaks to Us

Just the other day, I saw my dear friend in a situation just like that. She was pacing before her small group, wringing her hands, whispering, “I need a word from the Lord!”

My heart did a little twirl of ache for her. I wanted to grab her by the shoulders, look her in the eyes, and say, “Dear friend…you’ve already got a word from the Lord right there in that dog-eared Bible of yours, if you’ll let it set up camp in your soul!”

Sometimes believers are like kids clutching for that hand to hold, craving that divine Post-it note from Heaven. But as we grow, we learn to put on our big-girl pants daily and step into the waves, knowing the Lord is right there beside us the whole way.

“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart,” (Romans 10:8 NKJV). It isn’t hiding in some prophet’s DMs, waiting for a “thus sayeth the Lord” to make you feel ready. That Word’s already settled down in you, ready to light your path.

The Value of Scripture in Our Lives

To be filled with the Spirit is to let the Word guide you and inspire you. Not with tingles down your backbone and woo-woo feelings, but with Scripture carefully and intentionally stitched every day into your soul.

The Word-soaked life? It’s more than just brainy Bible trivia. It’s peace for your anxious heart when the world’s screaming. It’s love that makes you patient when the world’s testing you. It’s wisdom to know your next step forward when the path ahead seems dark. It’s courage to face the waves and step right in, knowing God will never let you drown.

When you’ve spent each day filling yourself with the Word of God, it is always present, written onto your very heart. You won’t be searching for a hand to grab, a magical moment of affirmation; you’ll know He’s already there.

Let the Word of God grow richly inside of you. Write out scriptures, dive into Bible studies, and spend time letting the Lord reveal Himself to you through the words. Pull up a chair, crack open that Bible, and let the Word of Christ move in, unpack its bags, and write itself upon your heart.
