Give Your Full Devotion To God And Trust Him

Psalm 81 invites God’s people to a life of joyful worship, sincere loyalty, and wholehearted trust. With a call of celebration, the Psalmist laid a foundation for us to give our full devotion to God.

Sing praises to God, our strength. Sing to the God of Jacob, Sing! Beat the tambourine. Play the sweet lyre and the harp. Blow the ram’s horn at new moon, and again at full moon to call a festival! Psalm 81:1-3

God’s people celebrated many festivals honoring Him and His provisions. We should also honor Him with the same vibrant worship. Joy thrives when believers honor God by their devotion.

The Psalmist then turned from celebration to confrontation. Speaking directly to His people, God reminded them of His past interventions and care for them. Thus, God required their devotion.

For this is required by the decrees of Israel; it is a regulation of the God of Jacob. He made it a law for Israel when he attacked Egypt to set us free. Psalm 81:4-5

He not only brought Israel out of Egypt, but He also removed heavy burdens, and answered their seasons of distress. God acted with power, compassion, and covenant love.

I heard an unknown voice say, “Now I will take the load from your shoulders; I will free your hands from their heavy tasks. You cried to me in trouble, and I saved you; I answered out of the thundercloud and tested your faith when there was no water at Meribah. Psalm 81:5-7

The Psalmist revealed a sobering truth that devotion to God demands more than moments of praise. It requires a heart anchored in loyalty. God desires worship along with our obedience.

He delivered His people so they would walk with Him, and trust and honor Him, above every other influence.

    Devotion to God

God Made a Plea for Full Devotion

Listen to me, O my people, while I give you stern warnings. O Israel, if you would only listen to me! Psalm 81:8

In that verse, God’s voice carries the tone of a Father longing for His children to return. We devote ourselves to Him for our own benefit because He doesn’t need anything from us.

God calls for our devotion because wandering hearts fall into traps. Those traps result in frustration and spiritual exhaustion. Partial devotion produces partial blessing or none at all.

Therefore, God instructs His people to abandon false gods completely. Idols today may look different from those the Psalmist wrote about, but they still pull hearts away from God.

The idols we can put before God offer convenience but never satisfaction. He provides the protection, wisdom, and strength we seek that only He can fill and lead us in righteousness.

You must never have a foreign god; you must not bow down before a false god. Psalm 81:9

When you think of a foreign god, what comes to your mind? Some sort of figurine that people use as a shrine? Physical images, or idols, and other carved figures serve only as one type of idol.

An actual foreign god includes anything that takes precedence over God. A person’s career, possessions, family, or political loyalty, to name only a few, can become “modern gods”.

The Psalmist didn’t use the word “trust,” but he could have, because trust grows where obedience lives. God tells us that if we walk in His ways and trust Him, He will defeat our enemies.

    Devotion to God

    Devotion and Trust Go Together

Devotion and trust intertwine because when we honor God with our consistent obedience, our trust in Him naturally strengthens. Obedience creates clarity, but disobedience creates confusion.

God never demands obedience to restrict us; He commands obedience to bless us. As we continue in this Psalm, its writer reveals the heart of God.

For it was I, the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things. Psalm 81:10

The picture of the Lord filling our mouths communicates His desire to satisfy and provide for us. Then we will receive an overflow of blessings as we trust God with our full devotion.

God stands ready to meet needs, supply strength, and pour out spiritual nourishment. He waits for hearts willing to seek Him without hesitation. The Psalmist included a painful confession.

    Devotion to God

    The Pain of Half-Devotion

“But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around. So I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas.” Psalm 81:11-12

When our hearts resist God, He often allows us to experience the consequences of our choices. He doesn’t do it because He enjoys seeing His children struggle.

No, he does it because He knows that spiritual hunger often awakens a deeper longing for Him. When we turn back to God, He will satisfy our hunger that we can’t get from anywhere else.

So, take heed to this sober warning. Full devotion to God brings forth blessings; half-devotion results in frustration because the Lord doesn’t bless divided loyalty.

He will, however, lovingly draw His people back, but He will honor their choices. Don’t let your trust erode by drifting toward self-reliance or worldly wisdom. Look how this psalm closes.

“Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him; they would be doomed forever. But I would feed you with the finest wheat. I would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock.” Psalm 81:15-16

He honors the choices we make, but that doesn’t mean He likes them. These images reveal nourishment, sweetness, and abundance. God repays our devotion. He gives His people His best.
