An Easter Feast

Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” (Matthew 26:27-28 NKJV)

Easter is a prime binge day on my chocolate calendar. I wait all year for the little malted-milk speckled eggs to arrive in stores. Giant chocolate-covered peanut butter eggs? The bigger the better. And I don’t care if I start on ears or elsewhere—every bite of a dark chocolate rabbit is a moment to relish.

And so, it’s with great regret that I remind myself of this sobering fact: Easter is not about chocolate.

    But it is a feast.

When we look back through the events during Holy Week in Scripture, the pivotal moment before Sunday morning occurs on Thursday evening, when Jesus gathered with His disciples in the “upper room.” It was Passover week, the Israelites’ appointed feast time in Jerusalem to commemorate how God delivered their nation from Egyptian captivity.

Jesus had sent Peter and John ahead to prepare the Jewish seder meal for everyone, just as God through Moses had directed his people. While the disciples dined on unleavened bread and wine, Jesus took the opportunity to give His final instructions to His very best friends—by washing their feet and explaining His sacrifice to come within hours.

The disciples were confused, missing the symbolism and failing to grasp that Jesus was about to leave them. They wouldn’t comprehend the magnitude of this last meal with Him until after His resurrection.

We Christians today experience a similar feast with our Lord and Savior. Like His first disciples, we gather with Him when we receive the elements of communion, His “body” and “blood” shed to rescue us from our sinful state. We use these occasions to confess our iniquities, ask for Jesus’ forgiveness, and receive His full-fledged pardon. With the privilege of hindsight, we find our hope and comfort in knowing He has risen and will fulfill His promises of heaven.

Our tiny feast—a pinch of bread and thimbleful of juice—becomes like the few loaves and fishes that Jesus used to feed thousands. Our communion foods amplify His presence among us. We join in “banqueting” with Him, finding joy in savoring His goodness.

As we approach Easter, perhaps you’ve made plans to attend a church service with communion, a sunrise worship time, a service of praise, or a special lunch with family on Easter Day. After worship, we’ll set out a big spread with ham, broccoli/rice, deviled eggs, orange gelatin “fluff,” sourdough bread, and a carrot-pineapple cake. Yum!

My prayer, though, is that we won’t forget to feast with Jesus. He is our glorious King, the one who deserves all praise and honor on this day. He has invited us to be seated with Him at His table of abundant life. Who can imagine the incredible riches that await us in heaven at the marriage feast of the Lamb?

Friend, I hope you will greet Easter morning with praise, in awe and wonder, with thanksgiving, for the gift of eternal life in the power of Christ’s resurrection. Let us all be captivated by the bounty of His love. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

And, I hope you’ll get to enjoy a bit of chocolate sweetness as well!

Blessed Jesus, thank You for the everlasting life You gave me so long ago with Your resurrection. Thank You for Your matchless grace and mercy—please continue to forgive me for failing to live for You, for chasing my desires instead of Yours. Draw me to Your table of abundance this Easter, and let me feast with You in worship. You are risen! Hallelujah! For Your praise and glory, Amen.
