A Toast to Friendships: To and For My Close Friends

I had a conversation with someone yesterday where I made the comment, “Friendship is earned and never taken for granted.” This got me thinking about the friends I have who have, over time, become the key roots on which I rely heavily on for love and support. I will now show you the best set of friends in the world.

William aka Will aka Willie-Wonka (when I’m being mean)

I am excited to share with you, one of my best friends! William and I are as different as two people could be yet we share so many similarities. Although we generally have differing opinions on almost everything, he always accepts me for who I am and has no qualms about goading me into doing me. He is one of those friends who will do stuff like going shopping with me (I’m a nightmare to go shopping with) when he truly hates it or accompanying me to a wedding he had no business attending, all because I didn’t want to go alone. Will goes over and beyond the call of friendship to help and support me in whatever ways he can. It doesn’t hurts that he gives fabulous, though sometimes condescending, advice as well.

Lavanjah aka Lav

Has there ever been a moment that you thank the Lord for? Well that moment for me was November 2010 when I made a post about becoming a nun and this very annoying young man decided he had to reply. We quarrelled that night but that moment birthed a very precious friendship. Lavanjah (the second best friend) is, in many ways, the wind beneath my wings! He has been a constant through the many seasons that I have gone through. When you find a friend who doesn’t blink or hesitate when you ask to use his credit card, you know you have found a gem. We argue a lot, mainly because we are both very stubborn, but I wouldn’t have him any other way! May I say that it doesn’t hurt that he is a prayer warrior who has this annoying but well-meaning habit of praying guys who are no good for me out of my life.

Shantel aka Sunshine aka Shine

Let me introduce you to my partner in crime! Sunshine! We went to the same high school where I had this annoying habit of bursting into the “I’ve Got Sunshine.” song whenever I saw her. Please note, I couldn’t help myself, I still do it up to this day but not as often. We didn’t become friends until we touched university but I feel like I have known her all my life. We are opposites in terms of personalities but we complement each other. While she is laid back, I have no problem about becoming confrontational. Shine is a great listener who has no problem giving me advice whether I want to hear it or not. I can’t tell you how many times she sat or walked and listened to my rantings. She reminds me to be silly and is someone who will not hesitate when I reach out to her for help. It certainly doesn’t hurt that we work with each other at the same office.

Chantal aka Chany, Shakeyra aka Keyra, Syisha aka Sy Sy and Tiffany aka Tiff

These ladies are my ride-or-dies? If I need laughter, they’ve got me covered! If I need prayer, they are not afraid to storm heaven! If I need encouragement, I know where to go. They keep me socialized. These ladies remind me that it is okay to laugh until I cry and my tummy ache (with them around, I can assure you this has happened several times over). They remind me to uphold the crazy code as demonstrated by our last attempt at the Mannequin Challenge. We have our ups and downs but I know without a doubt that they have my back. I couldn’t have asked for a better set of friends where these ladies are concerned. Even when we are upset with each other, our circle remains tight. It certainly doesn’t hurt that we all attend the same church.

Javahan aka Jav

I introduced you guys to Javahan a few months ago. Although he is on the other side of the island, I am assured of a weekly message checking up on me or a song, video or photo to make me smile. God forbid if my WhatsApp status should indicate that I am upset about something, I can expect a message giving me the Inquisition x10. Jav is a very thoughtful guy who cares about my well-being and maintaining my good opinion. To borrow, the analogy from Stephenie Meyer, he is my Jacob.

A few weeks ago, I made this post on Facebook:

These are the persons who inspire me! They are the ones who caused the Mama Bear who wrote that post to rise to the fore. They are the ones who encourage me to take just one more step. It only follows that I would want the same for them. Although I have other persons who I call friends and people who I would readily go the extra mile for, they are the ones who I would do anything in my power to help. They are my key roots. These are the friends I would dare to call FAMILY.

I LOVE AND APPRECIATE YOU GUYS…

XOXO,
Chañel.
