Women are Made in God's Image | Cathe Laurie Devotional
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness’” (Genesis 1:26 ESV).
A month ago, I bought a new outfit for a special occasion in D.C. The jacket and blouse fit like a glove, but the pants were way too long. So, I got out my trusty needle and thread to hem the pants. I’d done everything right: checked the measurements, made the adjustments, pinned the fabric, based the hem perfectly, tried them on, and then, I was ready to cut.
But just as the scissors hovered over the cloth, I paused. Not because I doubted myself—I’m no amateur—but because I realized the weight of the moment. It’s like the first stroke of a surgeon’s scalpel, the first strike of a sculptor’s chisel, or the first cut into a diamond. Once it’s done, it’s done.
Precision matters.
What Was God Thinking When He Made You?
Even God paused before His ultimate creative act. He’d already called the galaxies into existence, shaped the earth, and filled it with life. But before creating man and woman, He didn’t just do it—He reflected. The language is deliberate: The triune Godhead (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26 ESV). This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment act. It was planned, perfect, and profound.
The Meaning of ‘Made in God’s Image’
God made humanity—male and female—in His image. Not as an afterthought. He made humankind to reflect something glorious: Himself. Think about that. When God created humanity, He was putting Himself on display.
Think of it like this: I have family photos on the shelves all over my office. And if you pointed to them and asked, “Is this your son? Are these your grandchildren? Is this your daughter? Is that your dad?” I’d say yes. But we both know that the photos aren’t actually my son, grandchild, daughter, or dad—they’re images, a representation.
Being made in God’s image means we’re wired with a reflection of His creativity, truth, wisdom, love, and justice. Mankind can make moral choices and enjoy spiritual fellowship with Him. We are tasked with representing Him in Creation—ruling over it, caring for it, and putting His glory on display.
What Is Biblical Womanhood?
Ladies, your purpose isn’t to slap on makeup, strut your stuff, and hope the world notices. We’re not made just to earn likes on Instagram or bend over backward to fit cultural molds. Womanhood, according to Scripture, is about reflecting God’s glory.
There Is a Reason You’re Here
We’ll dive into a little more about womanhood in the weeks to come, but I want you to take a moment today to remember that you were made to reflect the beautiful image of God. You weren’t made on accident. When God created you, He took a pause first. He was deliberate. He was intentional. He honored the gravity of the moment.
You were made to reflect His image. You were made with purpose, beauty, and intention. There is a reason you are here.
Stand tall today and pray that He would show you more of Himself within you—to show you His pure, beautiful, intentional purpose and design and how He reflected Himself in you.
