Why God’s Presence Made Moses Tremble — Hebrews 12:18-21

God’s presence at Mount Sinai was so overwhelming that even Moses trembled with fear. Why? Because unholy people can’t stand in the presence of a holy God.

Hebrews 12:18–21
[18] For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest [19] and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them. [20] For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.” [21] Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.” (ESV)

Moses Trembled with Fear
God’s presence at Sinai was so overwhelming that even Moses trembled.
Blazing fire.
Darkness.
Gloom.
A trumpet blast grows louder.
The people heard God’s voice and “begged that no further messages be spoken to them” (v19). They couldn’t take it anymore.
Why? Because unholy people can’t stand in the presence of a holy God. The mountain was saturated with God’s holiness. These people, like all people, were unholy. They were right to shudder at the thought of coming into contact with that mountain. In God’s presence, unholy people should always shudder.
David Peterson says that the Israelites “…acknowledged the grace of God in speaking to them, but they were aware of their vulnerability in that encounter and their need for a God-appointed mediator.” They knew they couldn’t survive direct contact with his holiness on their own.
The Good News Is…
The good news is that Jesus has made a way for unholy people to stand before a holy God. As we’ll see tomorrow, Christians are those who have come to a better mountain. Jesus IS the mediator of a better covenant, and his blood speaks a better word.
Because of Christ’s finished work at the cross, justice has come AND mercy is possible. Through Christ, you can draw near to God not in fear of being consumed, but in freedom.
Reflection
If you’re in Christ, you no longer have to fear God’s holiness the way the Israelites did at Sinai. What changes in how you approach God when you remember that?
