Unlimited: The Powers in the Heavens

But in those days, following that distress, “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken (Mark 13:24–25, NIV).

The disciples asked Jesus when the destruction of the temple would occur.

Jesus described the trouble and deceptions that are coming upon the world. But now, in this, his most extensive recorded prophetic sermon, what Jesus says next is literally out of this world.

Something is going on here. He’s not just talking about the destruction of the temple!

Jesus is here quoting the prophet Joel, using imagery that is typical apocalyptic and that is associated with the end of the world. It shows how the evil that people do on earth doesn’t just affect us here on earth, but it disrupts the harmony of the heavens as well – the entire universe.

This was illustrated by the way that a supernatural darkness covered the land at the crucifixion of Jesus, and there was a great earthquake at his death.

So too, the evil and corruption in the world in the last days will also illicit upheavals of nature both on earth and in the heavens.

Think about your own life, and you’ll see this principle at work. Think of how wrong choices have ramifications that go far beyond the moment, and which impact many lives. What examples from your own life can you think of?

But it works the other way as well. When you choose what is good, it also has consequences that extend far beyond the present; in fact, into eternity.

Eli’s Reflection: What is a simple choice that you can make today to choose what is good? I encourage you to choose it. Your life echoes into eternity.

I bristle when a high-energy executive leaves the place of worship with the comment, ‘This was wonderful, Pastor, but now we have to get back to the real world, don’t we?’ I had thought we were in the most-real world, the world revealed as God’s, a world believed to be invaded by God’s grace and turning on the pivot of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.
