2 Timothy 3 tracks the transformation that takes place through Christ, turning us inside out, from living for my own self-focused story to participating in God’s astounding story.

2 Timothy 3 (my translation, compare NIV)
¹ But know this: in later days difficult times will come. ² For people will be self-focused, money-focused, self-promoting, arrogant, demeaning, rebellious to parents, ungrateful, unholy, ³ uncaring, irreconcilable, slanderers, uncontrolled, untamed, unprincipled, ⁴ traitors, reckless, demented, loving pleasure rather than God, ⁵ with a veneer of piety disconnected from its [transforming] power. Don’t associate with them.

⁶ For from this group come those who slip into homes and capture vulnerable women who’ve been weighed down with sins and are led by various cravings, ⁷ always learning and never able to come to understand the truth [that Jesus is Lord]. ⁸ Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, these oppose truth, people of corrupted thinking, unreliable when it comes to trust. ⁹ But they won’t achieve much: their senselessness will be obvious to everyone, just has happened with those two.

¹⁰ You [Timothy] thoroughly checked me out: my teaching, conduct, resolve, trust, calmness, love, bearing up, ¹¹ harassments, sufferings — all that came my way in Antioch, in Iconium, in Lystra, the harassments I endured, and our Master rescued me from them all. ¹² And everyone who wants to do life God’s way in King Jesus will be harassed. ¹³ Evil and pretentious people will regress from bad to worse, leading astray and being led astray. ¹⁴ Stay grounded in what you learned and came to trust, your connection with those you learned from, ¹⁵ and your connection from childhood with the Sacred Scriptures that have the capacity to enlighten you on the path to the rescue that arrives through allegiance to King Jesus. ¹⁶ All Scripture is God-infused and valuable for teaching, for confronting, for correcting, for basic guidance on doing right, ¹⁷ so God’s person can be proficient, able to bring any good task to completion.
