The River of Water of Life in the Bible (2)

New JerusalemNew Jerusalem’s river of water of life is portrayed by the river flowing from the garden of Eden and by the water out of the smitten rock in Exodus 17.

God promised the good land to Abraham and his descendants. He brought the children of Israel out of Egypt to bring them to that promise. The description of this good land in Deuteronomy 8 begins with verse 7, “Jehovah your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of waterbrooks, of springs and of fountains, flowing forth in valleys and in mountains.”

The flowing waterbrooks, springs, and fountains are pictures of the Spirit flowing in us today and eternally in New Jerusalem. The flow depicted by the good land is “in valleys and in mountains.” This matches our current Christian life which has many ups and downs, but wherever we are the Spirit flows.

Psalm 36:8-9 proclaims “They are saturated with the fatness of Your house, and You cause them to drink of the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.” The fountain of life is with God because God is the life and the light and their source for supply to us now and in New JErusalem.

In New Jerusalem surely we will be saturated and drinking; this should remind us to exercise to drink the Spirit today.
