The Protection Of The Lord Surrounds His People
Psalm 125 compares the protection of the Lord to the way the mountains surround Jerusalem. It reminds us to rest in the Lord’s unshakable care and guidance.
Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forever. Psalm 125:2
Mountains can carry a beautiful sight of a quiet strength that often stirs peace within one’s heart. Growing up in central Pennsylvania, I never lacked their beauty or presence.
From the main intersection in my hometown—what we call the square—when looking in every direction, you could see mountains. Their long ridges rise gently along the horizon.
They form peaceful borders with soft valleys of farm land resting between many of them. They never appear threatening, only steady and sure. Even snow covered they create a calming effect.
But mountains differ in other parts of the country. While visiting Cherokee, North Carolina, I observed a different kind of mountain. They towered straight up in the sky with sharp points.
Those peaks almost pressed toward the town as if they could tumble in at any moment. Instead of comfort, they stirred uneasiness within me. I’m sure, though, that locals loved their mountains.
The difference between those two landscapes reminds me that not every form of strength feels peaceful. Both types of mountains offer their own kind of protection, just as the Lord protects us.
Trust in the Protection of the Lord
The Psalmist wrote, “Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people,” to offer them protection. He spoke from an image very familiar to him.
I don’t know much about Jerusalem’s geography, so I looked it up. Indeed, Jerusalem rests among a circle of gentle, rounded mountains—protective rather than imposing.
They don’t threaten those within their reach; instead, they cradle them. That’s the picture Psalm 125 paints of the protection offered by the Lord—steady, encompassing, and lasting.
Just as those mountains don’t shift or crumble, God surrounds His people with constant care. Thankfully, the protection of the Lord doesn’t depend on our feelings.
Neither does it depend on what storms roll through our lives because God remains steadfast. Sometimes the mountains at home deflected storms, reminding us of God’s protective nature.
When danger approached ancient Jerusalem, the mountains acted as barriers. The watchman could easily see invading armies, which made it hard for them to surprise or overtake the city.
In the same way, the Lord positions Himself around His people. He guards our hearts and minds. God safeguards our paths from spiritual, emotional, and physical attacks from the enemy.
Our Protection from Jesus
Our Lord Jesus described His protection when He spoke about the sheepfold. In John 10, He said, “I am the gate .” Those who come in through Him will be saved. He explained that passage.
Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. John 10:9-10
Jesus identifies Himself as both the gate and the Good Shepherd. He guards the way and leads His flock. Every believer who walks through Him gains safety that no enemy can penetrate.
The sheep find rest not because they stand strong, but because the Shepherd surrounds them. The protection of the Lord continually surrounds His followers, whom He referred to as His sheep.
This image captures the same truth the Psalmist celebrated in Psalm 125. The Lord not only saves and keeps His people—His protection doesn’t end at salvation’s gate.
He walks the valleys with us. He covers us under His wings. And He stands between us and danger. Therefore, we don’t have to fear the threat of ungodly influence. This Psalm continued.
The wicked will not rule the land of the godly, for then the godly might be tempted to do wrong. Psalm 125:3
The Psalmist understood how temptation and compromise could spread when evil gains control. God’s people, however, thrive when they stay under His authority.

Take the Protection of the Lord for Your Entire Life
In our lives, “the land of the godly” represents our hearts—where God rules and His Spirit dwells. We can’t allow worldly or sinful influences to rule even a small corner of that land.
If we do, temptation will soon take root. We might start making excuses for behaviors we used to avoid. Or we may begin chasing desires that will draw us away from the Lord’s presence.
That’s why the Lord surrounds His people with His protection. He shields us from not only visible threats but also from subtle ones that whisper through temptations.
The devil rarely storms the front gate; he often slips in through distractions. Two of his more effective distractions come through puffing up our pride or enticing us to compromise.
Even believers who have served the Lord for decades must guard against drifting from His protection. One small step outside of the sheepfold can lead to greater danger than imaginable.
When facing trials, we often focus on what threatens us instead of who surrounds us. Unlike the mountains seen around Jerusalem, God’s presence remains unseen yet unmistakable.
- His hand shields us from dangers we’ll never notice.
- The Spirit of God whispers guidance when confusion clouds our way.
- His Word reinforces the walls of faith that keep us steady through storms.
The mountains don’t move—but we sometimes wander down to the valley on our own. The Lord, however, remains faithful. When we call, He welcomes us back within His embrace.
His surrounding presence doesn’t fade; our awareness of it sometimes does. So, consciously rest in the surrounding presence of the Lord and enjoy His protection.

Mount Zion
Psalm 125 began by reminding believers that our trust in God provides a secure anchor in our lives. It refers to Mount Zion, which stood as the highest point in Jerusalem.
Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever. Psalm 125:1
The Psalmist linked his unwavering trust in God to the strength of that mountain. It served as a place of God’s thundering presence. A presence that surrounds us with His power and peace.
No earthly security compares to the protection the Lord provides. Wealth, wisdom, and relationships all help in certain seasons, but none offer lasting safety for the soul.
Only the Lord surrounds His people “both now and forever” by His protection that stretches beyond time. The Psalmist ended with a prayer for the good and the evil.
O Lord, do good to those who are good, whose hearts are in tune with you. But banish those who turn to crooked ways, O Lord. Take them away with those who do evil. May Israel have peace! Psalm 125:4-5
Lord, thank you for surrounding your people with steadfast love. Lord, guard us from the influence of the ungodly and from wandering beyond our protection.
