The One Unique Eternal Marriage: the Lamb and New Jerusalem
New Jerusalem is a city fully in resurrection. It is spiritual, constituted with the divine, eternal life. This is seen in the forerunner in the church age as in Ephesians 2:19-22. Verse 19 speaks to the Ephesian believers (and to all of us) and verse 20 says we are being built together with “Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone.”
Verse 21 declares, “In whom [Christ Jesus] all the building is growing into a holy temple in the Lord.” Growing and in the Lord indicate that the building is of life not of physical materials. This verse is about “all the building,” believers in all places and all times. Verse 22 is “you also,” the believers in Ephesus and is applicable to the believers together in any one place. These believers “are being built together into a dwelling place of God in spirit.”
As presented in the prior posts, New Jerusalem, the consummation of God’s building, is “the bride, the wife of the Lamb” Jesus Christ. This is the eternal marriage in resurrection. In Luke 20:27-33 the Sadducees, who said there is no resurrection, challenged the Lord Jesus with a question about human marriage in resurrection.
Jesus replied, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are counted worthy to obtain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage” (v. 34-35). In resurrection, in eternity, there is the one wonderful marriage of the Lamb and New Jerusalem but no marriages of human individuals.
