Mark 8:35
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. (ESV)
Okay, context. Peter has confessed that Jesus is the Christ. This is a big deal.
The Christ is the long-awaited king that God promised in the Old Testament, who would come to save and rule his people.
Some were expecting an all-conquering king to come and defeat the political enemies of God’s people. And yet Jesus has just said that his task as the Christ would first involve suffering, rejection, and death by the hands of the religious establishment. But after three days, he would rise again, having truly defeated our greatest enemy, sin, Satan, and death.
And then he urges his followers to really count the cost of following him. To follow Jesus will also involve suffering, rejection, and crucifixion. As verse 35 says, following Jesus involves losing your life.
But this is worth it. Just like Jesus rose from the dead three days later, all those who give up their lives to trust in Jesus will actually save their life.
Death is not the end for those who belong to Christ. We have a resurrection hope. The empty tomb of Jesus guarantees that our tombs will also be empty on the last day.
Following Jesus may lead to greater hardship in this life, but losing your life and the comforts of this world for the sake of Christ and his gospel is always worth it.
