The Flow of the Spirit of Life
Philippians 1:19 speaks of “the bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.” This supply is portrayed by the river in New Jerusalem, “a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb in the middle of its street.”
Just as our physical body is dependent on the circulation of blood within it, the mystical body of Christ is dependent on the circulation of the Spirit of life within it….The circulation, the flow, of this Spirit is the fellowship of the Body. In all our work for the Lord, we should have the inner sense of the flow of life….In all that we do, we should sense whether of not we have the flow of life and are in the flow of life. When we have the inner flow of life as we are serving the Lord, we will sense that we are inwardly watered, refreshed, strengthened, and uplifted.*
The flow of the Spirit is the fellowship of the Body of Christ. This fellowship is both vertical, connecting us with the Triune God, and horizontal, connecting us with each other (1 John 1:3, 7). The faithful God called us into both aspects of this fellowship when we first believed into the Lord (1 Cor. 1:9).
When we are in this fellowship, in the flow of the Spirit of life, we are living the present reality of New Jerusalem.
