The Divine and Mystical Romance, 2

The prior post has Old Testament verses about the Lord as the Husband and Israel, representing all God’s people, being His wife. This reveals the divine and mystical romance in the Bible.

Verses about this couple are in the New Testament.
New Jerusalem Jesus presents Himself as a Bridegroom in Matthew 9:15, Mark 2:19-20, Luke 5:34-35
    • Jesus illustrates His return with a parable about the Bridegroom coming for the wedding feast, Matthew 25:1-13
    • John the Baptist, speaking about the Lord refers to the Bridegroom and the bride in John 3:28-29
    • Paul says he has betrothed the believers to one Husband, to Christ 2 Corinthians 11:2-3, and here he makes reference to Adam and Eve
    • In the context of husband and wife Christ is described as loving and caring for the church in Ephesians 5:25-27
    • As part of the portion in Ephesians 5, verses 31-32 contain a quote from Genesis 2 about Adam and Eve
    • There is rejoicing in Revelation 19:7 because the marriage of the Lamb has come

These verses, together with those in the Old Testament, definitely point to the Lamb Christ and the New Jerusalem as the eternal couple.

The realization of God’s heart of love toward His people is the New Jerusalem, which will be His eternal wife. Would God marry an actual physical city? This is totally illogical and unscriptural. Verses 2 and 9 of Revelation 21 clearly state that the New Jerusalem is the wife of the Lamb, the incarnated God. His wife is composed of all His chosen and redeemed people. His wife is the realization of His heart’s desire to marry His people throughout the Scriptures.*
