Tender Like a Mother — 1 Thessalonians 2:5–8

Paul could have pulled rank. He didn’t. Instead, he chose to be tender like a mother, and that changed everything about how he cared for the church in Thessalonica.

For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed, God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us. — 1 Thessalonians 2:5–8 (ESV)

Paul was an apostle. He had authority. He could have made demands.

He didn’t.

No Flattery, No Agenda

Paul lists off everything he refused to do. No flattery. No pretext for greed. No chasing glory, from them or from anyone else. And he had every right to expect honour as an apostle of Christ. He just never cashed it in.

It’s an admirable example. Real gospel ministry doesn’t use people to get something. It doesn’t manipulate with nice words to win favour. Paul could have leaned on his position. Instead, he laid it down.

Gentle Like a Nursing Mother

Instead of demands, he demonstrates humility: We were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.

What an incredible image of selfless care! She’s holding, feeding, protecting something fragile and new.

That’s how Paul describes his ministry to a church that had only just turned from idols to Jesus.
New believers.
Newborns in the faith.
They needed to be held, not hammered.

“So being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God, but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.”

Sharing the gospel of God was a given. But he gave so much more to these precious people.
His time.
His presence.
His life.

You can understand why the believers in Thessalonica became so dear to him. That’s the kind of affection that grows fast in real community, when people do life together and not just doctrine together. Paul gave the Thessalonians both.

The Good News Is…

The good news is that this tenderness Paul shows us is a reflection of Jesus himself. Jesus is gentle and lowly, the one who invites the weary and burdened to come and find rest (see Matthew 11:28-30). Through his life, death, and resurrection, there is welcome for the weary, blessing for the burdened, and salvation for the sinner. And because we have received that kind of tenderness from Jesus, we can offer it to others.

Reflection

Thank God for someone gentle with you when your faith was new.
Ask God to give you the same affection Paul had for those he served.
Pray for someone in your life who needs your patient, gentle presence this week.
