Spiritual Eating on our Path to New Jerusalem (9)
In addition to the New Testament portions already presented, 1 Peter 2 has good verses on nourishment, growth, and building, all of which are for New Jerusalem. First Peter 1:23 announces that we have been “regenerated [born again] through the living and abiding word of God.”
Verse 2:2 continues “as newborn babes, long for the guileless milk of the word in order that by it you may grow unto salvation” God’s word is milk, nutrition for our growth in the Christian life. Verse 2:3 continues “if you have tasted that the Lord is good.” We will long for the milk if we have tated the Lord Himself in the word. May we all have such tasting!
Verse 2:4 transitions from growth to building, presenting the Lord as the living stone and urging us to come to Him.Verse 2:6 refers to Christ as “a cornerstone, chosen and precious.” Verse 2:5 affirms that we also “as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house.” The transition from growth to building matches 1 Corinthians 3:6—we are God’s farm, God’s building.
In this age our growth for God’s building causes us to “tell out the virtues of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). This “telling out” is both by our living and our speaking. Our “telling out” is in this age and, eternally, via the ultimate realization of God’s building, New Jerusalem.
