Spiritual Eating on our Path to New Jerusalem (6)

Israel journeyed from Egypt to the good land with three stages of eating—the passover, the manna, and the rich produce of the land, followed by particular individuals enjoying the Lord’s word by eating it.

In the New Testament Matthew 4:4 is the first word about our eating. The Lord Jesus, quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, said “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out through the mouth of God.”New Jerusalem

The word of God is our spiritual food. We must come to the Bible and at the same time come to the Lord Jesus. In John 5:39-40 the Lord rebuked His Jewish persecutors (5:16) because, although they searched the Scriptures, they would not come to Him.

The Lord gave Himself in the flesh to die for us. Now He is resurrected as the living bread. He assures us (John 6:57) “he who eats Me, he also shall live because of Me.” The way to eat Him is to come to the Word of God, the Bible, with exercise of our human spirit. This is John 6:63, “It is the Spirit who gives life;…the words which I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.”

These verses, and the verses in the prior post. are for our Christian living today and our walking the narrow path (Matt. 7:14) to New Jerusalem. Be assured the Lord Jesus did not say “he who studies Me” but “he who eats Me” and then told us that His words, which are spirit and life, are what we should eat.
