Spiritual Eating on our Path to New Jerusalem (5)
Over a long period of time Israel went from Egypt to the wilderness to the good land and later built the temple in Jerusalem. The innermost part of that temple, the holy of holies, was a portrait of New Jerusalem*. On Israel’s path of progress they had the three significant steps of nourishment from the Lord—the passover, the manna, and the rich and varied produce of the good land.
After the temple was built there are more verses about receiving nourishment from the Lord. In Jeremiah 15:16 the prophet says to Jehovah, “Your words were found and I ate them, and Your word became to me the gladness and joy of my heart.” And a psalmist declares in 119:103 “How sweet are Your words to my taste! Sweeter than honey to my mouth!”
The Lord’s instruction to Ezekiel about eating are: “Open your mouth and eat what I give you…Son of man, eat what you find; eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel. So I opened my mouth, and He gave me that scroll to eat. And He said to me, Son of man, feed your stomach and fill your inward parts with this scroll that I am giving you. And I ate it, and it was like honey in my mouth in its sweetness” (Ez. 2:8; 3:1-3).
Each of these portions confirms that God’s word is for our nourishment that we may enjoy something from Him to cooperate with Him in his move on earth. This applies to us today; we take His word as our food and labor with Him to conclude this age that the Lord may appear in glory.
