Spiritual Eating on our Path to New Jerusalem (4)
Israel’s pictures of our spiritual eating began with the passover in Egypt and continued with manna in the wilderness. The goal of their journey was to reach the good land, to settle themselves in it, and then to build the house of God in Jerusalem.
Deuteronomy 8 describes the riches of the good land. Verse 7 begins with the water, “For Jehovah your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of waterbrooks, of springs and of fountains, flowing forth in valleys and in mountains.” Water is the most basic element for our living. Here it is a picture of the eternal water, the river of life in New Jerusalem.
Then verse 8 continues, “A land of wheat and barley and vines and fig trees and pomegranates; a land of olive trees with oil and of honey.” Everything named here is for nutrition to enable the Israelites to live in the good land. The reality today is Christ with all His riches empowering us to live Him.
Verse 9a continues with more words about nourishment, “A land in which you will eat bread without scarcity; you will not lack anything in it.” These verse show the emphasis of the Lord is our spiritual eating for our spiritual journey. Verse 9b goes on the present material for God’s building. The building comes out of the proper living which is a result of the proper eating.
Verse 10 concludes the description “And you shall eat and be satisfied, and you shall bless Jehovah your God for the good land which He has given you.” Let us eat Jesus as the bread of life, be satisfied with Him, and bless Him as we move forward to New Jerusalem.
