REVIEW: Netflix’s Movie, “Damsel” - The DV Walking Wounded
This is NOT a fairytale, unless you like the old world ones where dark things happen. Elodie is NOT a run-of-the-mill-princess. Warning: this is a DARK ride. However, if you’re looking for an excellent “women empowerment” movie, THIS movie is definitely for you!
Millie Bobbie Brown plays Elodie, a dutiful daughter of a struggling land’s lord, who agrees to marry the prince of Aurea (in order to provide for her own land’s starving people), only to find the royal family of this neighboring land has recruited her as a human sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. She is lured under the false guise of marrying a handsome prince of a seemingly plentiful kingdom. The kingdom has a dark secret and even darker practices to keep their lands flourishing. Elodie has no idea she’s about become tribute to a terrible curse!
I loved the fact that this wasn’t a traditional faerie tale, where Prince Charming saves the day…the prince actually turns out to be a villian in this tale! The plot twist is that the Princess saves HERSELF through using her wits and bravery, illustrating that she is NO “damsel in distress.” GIRL POWER! Plus, there is an incredible dragon that dominates the screen, and I LOVE dragons! They symbolize power and vengence, as well as cunning and loyalty. Sounds rather like the main [human] character! Elodie also mysteriously loves sketching mazes, which plays into the plot of the movie — I love that about her too!
This movie was adapted from a book by Eveyln Skye, also entitled Damsel. The MPAA rates this movie as PG-13 for sequences of strong creature violence, action, and bloody images.
