Restore Us Again And Revive Your People
Now restore us again, O God of our salvation. Put aside your anger against us once more. Psalm 85:4
Psalm 85 carries the voice of a people who remember mercy and long for renewal. Its writer looks back on God’s saving work, then presses forward by praying a bold prayer.
The beginning verses of this Psalm speak with urgency to believers who know God’s grace. Under the weight of spiritual dullness, it opens with the following remembrance.
Lord, you poured out blessings on your land! You restored the fortunes of Israel. You forgave the guilt of your people—yes, you covered all their sins. Psalm 85:1–2
Memory fuels faith. The writer rehearsed God’s past mercy, not to live in yesterday, but to strengthen today’s prayer. God had forgiven, restored, and turned away His fierce anger.
That history invites trust because what God did before, He can do again. This pattern still guides Christians today. We do not approach God empty-handed but come with the cross in view.
Jesus fully bore our guilt. He did not partially forgive sin; He removed it. When discouragement clouds our vision, the gospel sharpens our focus. His work anchors our every prayer for renewal.
We ask for revival because redemption already stands secure in Jesus. This Psalm shifted from remembrance to the petition of “Restore us again.”
The writer didn’t blame his circumstances or enemies. He turned inward and upward, acknowledging his need for God’s restoring hand.
Revival doesn’t begin with louder noise or better strategy. It begins with humility before God. The Psalmist said, “Restore us again.” Individual repentance grows into corporate renewal.
God’s people asked Him to breathe life where apathy crept in, and obedience weakened. They desired more than relief from their trouble. They sought renewed fellowship with God Himself.

Restore and Revive Us
True revival always reconnects our hearts to the Lord, but not just to make us comfortable. The Israelites, however, found themselves in a very uncomfortable setting.
Will you be angry with us always? Will you prolong your wrath to all generations? Psalm 85:5
They knew they had crossed the line with God. We also know when we wander off in our own direction instead of God’s. Verse six continued with a pressing, deep question.
Won’t you revive us again, so your people can rejoice in you? Psalm 85:6
When we ask God to revive us, what exactly do we want Him to do? This prayer, which centers on spiritual renewal, asks God to restore to us our passion and joy in Him.
Not joy for success or to ease us, but joy in Him. When our hearts drift from Him, joy leaks away. When God revives His people, joy returns because fellowship with Him returns.
Christ-centered joy flows from restored communion, not improved circumstances. This Psalm represents a desire to return to a vibrant, obedient, and “alive” faith. The prayer continues.
Show us your unfailing love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. Psalm 85:7
The Psalmist asked God to reveal what He already promised. He sought a fresh sight of His love. In Christ, God answered this prayer fully. The cross displays unfailing love without limit.
The resurrection announces salvation with power, and we know that. This familiar truth grows dull when our hearts become inattentive. Revival sharpens our awareness of grace already given.
Have you ever asked someone a question and they answered, but you didn’t hear what they said? We all get preoccupied. The Psalmist committed to giving God his undivided attention.

Give God Your Attention
I listen carefully to what God the Lord is saying, for he speaks peace to his faithful people. But let them not return to their foolish ways. Psalm 85:8
If we want God to restore us, renewal requires listening because noise crowds out obedience. God speaks peace to His people and warns them not to return to their foolish ways.
Grace never licenses complacency. When God revives, He calls His people away from the patterns that drained them spiritually. Now we must root our hope in God.
Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, so our land will be filled with his glory. Psalm 85:9
The fear of the Lord prepares the soil for revival. While reverence nurtures obedience, obedience invites His blessing. God’s glory fills the places where His people walk humbly before Him.
Unfailing love and truth have met together. Righteousness and peace have kissed! Truth springs up from the earth, and righteousness smiles down from heaven. Psalm 85:10-11
These qualities converge perfectly in Christ Jesus. At the cross, love did not cancel truth, and truth did not crush love. Righteousness did not silence peace.
Christ fulfilled every demand of God’s holiness while extending peace to sinners. Revival flourishes when believers live near the cross. This Psalm closes by trusting God’s future grace.
Yes, the Lord pours down his blessings. Our land will yield its bountiful harvest. Righteousness goes as a herald before him, preparing the way for his steps. Psalm 85:12-13
God’s work produces fruit. Righteousness prepares the way for His steps. When God revives His people, their lives display changed priorities and renewed obedience.
This Psalm teaches us to look back at redemption and look forward with confidence. In Christ, we possess every reason to pray that God will “Restore us again and revive your people.”
