Our Human Spirit
In John 4:24 Jesus told us that “God is Spirit.” This is God’s nature, and God created man with a human spirit corresponding to His nature. Proverbs 20:27 speaks of our human spirit, “The spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah” and John 3:6 and Romans 8:16 present the functioning of the divine Spirit with our human spirit.
First Thessalonians 5:23 clearly states that man is of three parts, “spirit and soul and body.” Although some people think that the soul and spirit are the same, Hebrews 4:12 is very definite that they are distinct—”the word of God is living and operative and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit.”
The building of the church, first spoken of by the Lord in Matthew 16, is a matter in spirit. “You also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in spirit” (Eph. 2:22). This building during the present age will bring us to New Jerusalem in the future.
The building in spirit is by the rich supply from the Head, Jesus Christ, which flows out from Him through His members for mutual building up. This is presented in Ephesians 4:16 and Colossians 2:19. Our path to New Jerusalem is to hold to Him and to let His riches flow through us to others.
