Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.

-Deuteronomy 6:4, NIV

In some theological circles, marriage is taught as a hierarchy where the husband is lord over the wife. This is taught as reflective of the God-head. However, that would be a teaching a heresy.

God is One.

And there is no possibility for hierarchy to exist in oneness.

So much heartache could be avoided by correct theology on this matter. Instead of teaching on hierarchy in marriage relationships, we ought to be teaching on the oneness of marriage.

How do we emulate the mutual submission of the God-Head where no one is greater or less than in the Trinity?

The emphasis ought not to be about power dynamics–submission or “leadership”–but rather on emulating oneness and unity. This was Christ’s prayer for the Church. Certainly, that applies to marriages.
