New Jerusalem’s Wall Expresses God
The New Jerusalem has a “great and high wall” (Rev. 21:12a) and “the building material of its wall was jasper” (21:18). The city’s “light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone” (21:11).
The wall is for separation and protection. The New Jerusalem as the holy city will be absolutely separated unto God and will fully protect the interests of God.
According to verse 21:11, jasper is “a most precious stone,” a stone that is “clear as crystal.” Its color is dark green, which signifies life in its richness. Jasper in 21:18, as in 21:11 and 4:3, signifies God’s communicable glory in His rich life (John 17:22, 2). It is the appearance of God, which is also the appearance of the holy city. The city’s wall and first foundation are built with it.*
God’s eternal purpose is to gain an expression of Himself in a corporate humanity. For this human beings must be cleansed by His redemption and filled with His life. This life builds these humans together and brings forth God’s manifestation in them.
The jasper, the material of the wall, is “most precious” because it matches God’s expression in Revelation 4:3. To have New Jerusalem solely and fully radiating God’s glory, His appearance, is certainly precious. May we all cooperate with the Spirit’s working in us to reach this goal!
