New Jerusalem: Greater, More Perfect

Hebrews 8 to 10 shows a contrast between the old covenant and the new covenant. The difference—Jesus Christ is the reality of everything in the new covenant. He is the Minister, the High Priest, and the Offerings. This is the basis for preparation of New Jerusalem.New Jerusalem

The old covenant had a physical tabernacle and then a physical temple. Hebrews 9:1 says, “its sanctuary was of this world.” In contrast, Hebrews 9:11 speaks of “the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not of this creation.”

The Old Testament sanctuaries were of the old creation, but Christ has brought us to the new sanctuary in the new creation, that is, in resurrection. This describes New Jerusalem. It comes “down out of heaven from God” (Rev. 21:2, 10) showing that it is heavenly and divine. It Hebrews 12:22 it is named “the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.”

As a result of being born again, we have the heavenly life in us and we are a new creation. Christ is in us and we are in Him. It is of God that we are in Christ; “of God you are in Christ Jesus” (1 Cor. 1:29-30). Further, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”

So, hold the spiritual reality of New Jerusalem and forget all the physical descriptions derived from the old creation.
