New Jerusalem Foreseen in Ephesians, 8
Ephesians 2:13-16 tells us what Christ accomplished on the cross. He thus become peace to us (v. 14), released the gospel of peace (v. 17), and gave us access in one Spirit to the Father (v. 18). Now we are all “members of the household of God” (v. 19). In this household we are growing, being built together, with New Jerusalem as the final goal.
Verse 2:20 says we are “being built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone.” The next verse describes this building work—”all the building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord.” Ultimately God and the Lamb, into whom we are being built, are the temple which is New Jerusalem.
The building work is not outward, not in the natural realm, but comes from our growing in the life of the Lord. We received this life from Him (John 10:10) and now we grow. Human beings are a picture of this—a baby is born with life and then grows for many years.
This growth is “in the Lord;” it is in no way separate from Him. Likewise New Jerusalem is in the Lord and in no way separate from Him. This growth is universal, including all the New Testament believers in verse 21, and there is a local aspect wherever we are as expressed in verse 22. This building is in spirit and the reality of New Jerusalem is in spirit.
