New Jerusalem Foreseen in Ephesians, 2
Ephesians foretells New Jerusalem in many ways. Verse 1:6 declares that God’s operating is “to the praise of the glory of His grace,” and verse 1:7 touches “the riches of His grace.” A recent post presents this verse.
Ephesians 1:9 speaks of “the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Himself.” The holy city is no longer a mystery because it is revealed in Revelation and this revelation is supported by portions in other New Testament books. “His good pleasure” and “purposed in Himself” show how important this is to God.
In verse 1:11 “we were designated as in inheritance,” so that “we would be to the praise of His glory” (1:12; also 1:6, 14). Certainly the eternal city is for God’s praise and God’s glory. Verse 1:14 tells us that the Spirit “is the pledge of our inheritance.” In 1:11 we are God’s inheritance and in 1:14 He is ours. This is fully mutual and so is New Jerusalem.
Verses 1:2, 3, 17 speak of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Verses 1:13 and 14 present the Holy Spirit’s work in us. Thus Ephesians 1 has the Triune God, just as New Jerusalem has the Triune God with the river of water of life flowing out from the throne of God and the Lamb.
