New Jerusalem Foreseen in Ephesians, 1
New Jerusalem is the consummation, the high point, of all God’s accomplishments in carrying out His eternal purpose. Ephesians has much to do with God’s purpose and His economy—His management of everything for accomplishing this purpose. This post will be the first of many going through the book of Ephesians* to look at some words and phrases which relate to or imply something about New Jerusalem.
Ephesians 1:2, “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Prior posts presented a relationship between grace and New Jerusalem, and between New Jerusalem and peace. Both are coming from “God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” This is parallel to the river of water of life flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb in New Jerusalem.
Ephesians 1:4 says that our God and Father “chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and without blemish before Him in love.” To be “holy” is for the holy city (Rev. 21:2) and to be “without blemish” is to be part of Christ’s bride, the holy city, which is “without blemish” (5:27*).
We have also been predestinated unto sonship (1:5). Sonship means that we have the divine, eternal life, and that God is our Father. This is the unique life of New Jerusalem. Verse 5 also mentions “the good pleasure of His will.” Certainly bringing forth New Jerusalem is God’s will and is pleasure to Him.
