Light Shines In The Darkness For The Godly

Light shines in the darkness for the godly. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. Psalm 112:4

The Psalms hold a unique place in scripture. Some Psalmists wrote songs of thanksgiving and praise that lift God’s name up in worship.

Others came from cries of the heart pleading for God’s deliverance from the enemies of His people. While others pray, asking for God’s strength in the midst of affliction.

Psalm 112, however, offers something different. It paints a portrait of godly men and women who live with reverence toward the Lord.

They demonstrate the beauty of righteousness in both their character and their actions. But who exactly are the godly? If you ask ten people, you might get ten different responses.

Does God Really Put A High Value On Us?

Some would focus on outward appearances, like church attendance, moral choices, or charitable works. Others point to inward devotion, like prayer, faith, and obedience.

Psalm 112 helps settle the matter by describing what the godly look like in God’s eyes, not man’s. The Psalmist began by describing the character of the godly.

How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands! Psalm 112:1

Godliness begins with reverence for the Lord and a genuine love for His Word. Those living godly lives don’t treat obedience to Him as a burden but as a delight.

They see God’s commands as a light that shines on pathways of blessings, protection, and joy.

From that posture of reverence, the blessings that flow touch every part of life. The Psalmist declared that the children of the godly will succeed.

Their children will be successful everywhere; an entire generation of godly people will be blessed. They themselves will be wealthy, and their good deeds will last forever. Psalm 112:3-4

Their righteousness extends beyond a single lifetime, shaping future generations. A parent who fears the Lord and delights in His commands leaves a legacy.

They hand their children more than possessions; they pass on to them an inheritance of faith. The Psalmist continued with verse four, which serves as the heartbeat of this Psalm.

Light shines in the darkness for the godly. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. Psalm 112:4

What does it mean when it says light shines in darkness? The world swirls with shadows made up of fear, sin, injustice, sickness, and despair. The blindness of the dark causes discouragement.

However, for the godly, light breaks through darkness. This light doesn’t come from human wisdom or inner strength. It flows straight from the presence of God as indicated in other verses.

    • Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105
    • Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12

The godly walk through dark seasons with confidence because scripture shines its light on their steps. His presence also radiates through the lives of the godly, illuminating hope for others.

Notice also how this Psalm ties light with generosity and righteousness. These qualities shine like beacons in a dark and selfish world.

Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly. Psalm 112:5

A generous heart reflects the giving nature of God, and righteousness displays integrity rooted in His truth. When believers live this way, their lives become testimonies of God’s light that shines.

    Standing Against Evil

Such people will not be overcome by evil. Those who are righteous will be long remembered. They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. Psalm 112:6-7

Godly men or women like us will face trials. We will even encounter temptations, endure opposition, and sometimes suffer unjustly, yet evil cannot overtake us.

The forces of darkness may press in, but they can never hold victory over God’s children. The Psalmist declared, “They do not fear bad news.” That phrase creates a challenge for us.

Do you enjoy hearing bad news? Nobody likes bad news of any kind. Whether it comes as a diagnosis, financial hardship, or an unexpected loss, it becomes unsettling to our souls.

We will stand differently when we trust the Lord to care for us. This confidence does not erase our pain or sorrow, but it anchors our hearts in hope.

The godly know that even if circumstances look bleak, God’s promises remain sure. His light shines brightly. It dispels the darkness that tries to keep us from putting our hope in God.

They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly. Psalm 112:8

Fearlessness does not come from denial of reality; it flows from faith in God’s sovereignty. The godly remember that the Good Shepherd leads them, and God’s Spirit strengthens them.

The wicked will see this and be infuriated. They will grind their teeth in anger; they will slink away, their hopes thwarted. Psalm 112:10

How The Ungodly Respond to the Light that Shines

The godly experience a light that shines while the wicked fade. Righteousness produces lasting fruit; wickedness leaves empty hands. This Psalm highlights the witness of the godly.

Their lives and the light that shines in them provoke a reaction from unbelievers. Some of them respond with curiosity and hunger, desiring the peace and joy they observe.

Others respond with hostility because the light that shines exposes their darkness. Light never hides because when it shines, it pierces through their darkness, forcing a response.

    Who Are the Godly?

The answer lies not in human achievement but in divine grace. Every person who trusts Jesus as their Lord and Savior steps into the category of “the godly.”

Through His blood, Christ washes away sin and clothes believers in His righteousness. Godliness begins with salvation. It grows through obedience and compassion, empowered by the Spirit.

Psalm 112 describes the life of a Christian. You may not feel fearless, but the Spirit inside you builds confidence. Plus, you may face darkness, but God’s Word shines its light in your pathway.

You may encounter bad news, but the Good News of the gospel anchors your hope. So walk in victory today, not because of your strength, but because the strength of the Lord holds you fast.

Let His light shine through your generosity. Let His mercy flow through your compassion. And let His truth guide your steps in righteousness.

As the world grows darker, the light of the godly shines brighter and brighter. In other words, wherever Christians go, spiritual darkness doesn’t stand a chance.

Lord, as your light shines through my life, may your generosity, compassion, and righteousness reflect your glory through me.
