Let the Lord’s Words Abide in Us

John 15 records words of the Lord Jesus. “Abide in Me and I in you” (v. 4) and “If you abide in Me and My words abide in you” (v. 7). To live with the Lord is to live with His words, both now and in New Jerusalem.

The Lord’s words here are His instant and present speaking (Greek rhema). In John 8:31 the Lord said, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples.” The word here is the constant word (Greek logos). When we put these two verses together, we see that if we abide in the Lord’s logos, His constant word, His rhema, His present and instant word, will abide in us. The way to stay, remain, in our organic union with Christ, is by our abiding in His word. This is why it is very crucial for us
to be in the Word of God daily; we need to read His Word daily and…pray over
and with His Word.*

Colossians 3:16 exhorts us, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom.” But how should we do this? The answer is in Ephesians 6:17-18, “receive…the sword of the Spirit, which Spirit is the word of God, by means of all prayer and petition, praying at every time in spirit.”

To receive the word of God by prayer, we need few of our words. We primarily pray the written word while taking a longer time to muse (Josh. 1:8; Psa. 105:2; 119:15, 48, 78, 148) on it. To muse includes our speaking the word aloud, considering it, and praising and thanking the Lord.
