Let Everything That Has Breath Praise the Lord – Psalm 150:6

Everyone and everything that has breath is invited to praise God. Yes, that includes you.

This week, we are in Psalm 150, where we ask four questions about praising the LORD. Where? Why? How? By whom?

By Whom Is God to Be Praised?

What This Meant for Israel

By the end of Psalm 150, we come to the final, climactic call.
Not just the religious leaders.
Not just the musicians.
Not just the people in the temple.

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”

Everything. Everyone. Every creature. Every person. The whole of humanity.

We’re going to get a little interactive right now. Place two fingers on your neck and find your carotid pulse. On the other hand, put your palm in front of your open mouth.

Pause for a moment.

Can you feel your breath? You qualify.
Can you feel your heart beat, beat, beat, beat? You’re invited to praise.

This invitation was a huge call for Israel. It wasn’t confined to one group or one place. It expanded from the sanctuary to the whole cosmos. From priests to people. From people to all living creatures.

Psalm 148 gives us a fuller picture. It invites the sea monsters to praise him. The beasts and all cattle. The creeping things and flying birds. Kings and judges. Young men and maidens. Old men and children.

And yet something was broken. Sin had entered the world. Not all of creation was praising God as it should. Rebellion ran deep.

What This Means for Us This Side of the Cross

But here’s where it gets truly breathtaking.

In Romans 1, one way that sin is described is as a failure to give thanks to God.

All people have rebelled against God, and yet in the gospel, we have good news.

We’ve been rescued.
We’ve been redeemed.
We’ve been brought back to God through Jesus.

The one who gives life and breath has given new life and new breath in the gospel!

And so, along with everything that has breath, we use our breath to do what we were always supposed to do: give praise and honour to the God who made us and has now saved us through his Son.

When we praise God, we’re not doing it alone.

John saw this vision in Revelation 5:13. He wrote: “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing: ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, for ever and ever!'”

The Good News Is…

The good news is that everything that has breath can praise God because Jesus has made a way. He lived the life we failed to live, and he died the death that we deserve, and he rose again offering resurrection life to all who trust in him.

And when you praise him, you’re joining an eternal chorus. Heaven and earth. Angels and saints. Every creature that draws breath. All of it united in saying, “He is worthy.” He alone is worthy.

Reflection

Spend some time listing the many things that you can praise God for. Ask God to give you a heart to praise him, alongside everything that has breath, for who he is and what he’s done.
