    Jacob’s Ladder – Genesis 28:12

Alone and afraid in the wilderness, Jacob dreamed of Jacob’s ladder reaching to heaven — a vision that points forward to Jesus, our true way to the Father.

“As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway.” — Genesis 28:12 (NLT)

    Heaven Opened

As we continue our journey through Scripture, seeking to see Jesus more clearly, we come to Jacob fleeing alone into the wilderness. He was weary and uncertain, bearing the consequences of his own failures. As the sun set, Jacob found a stone for his pillow and lay down to sleep. Yet it was there, in that lonely place, that God met him.

Jacob dreamed of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending upon it. Above the ladder stood the Lord, who spoke promises of blessing, presence and protection over Jacob’s life.

Jacob’s ladder points forward to Jesus Himself. In the Gospel of John, Jesus alludes to this very story when He tells Nathanael: “You will see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man” (John 1:51). Jesus presents Himself as the true ladder between heaven and earth. He is the One who connects us to God.

Through sin, humanity became separated from God. But through Jesus, heaven has been opened to us once again. Jesus came down from heaven to bring us safely to the Father. In Christ, God is no longer distant. We are invited into a relationship of grace and fellowship with Him. Because we have been made right with God through Jesus, we can enjoy His presence, guidance and peace in our daily lives.

    The Good News is…

Jacob awoke and declared, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I wasn’t even aware of it!” Sometimes we too feel alone or far from God. Yet the story of Jacob’s ladder reminds us that God often meets us in the very places of weakness, uncertainty and wandering. And through Jesus, the way to the Father stands open. Heaven has touched earth in Christ. The ladder has come down. And the good news is that, because of Jesus, we never walk alone.
