Holy Spirit as Advocate (podcast) (John 16)

In a previous podcast on John 14, we heard Jesus introducing us to the person of the Holy Spirit. In this podcast on John 15–16, Jesus introduces us to what the Holy Spirit does. Together, John 14–16 provide a theology of the Spirit (pneumatology): the person and work of the Holy Spirit, according to the founder of our faith.

So, what does the Holy Spirit do? What is his mission as the Advocate, the Spirit of truth? This 27-minute podcast was recorded at Riverview Joondalup, 26 September 2021:

My translation (compare NIV) highlights the courtroom metaphor that permeates these chapters, as Jesus was about to be put on trial by the powers that claim to run the world:

John 15:26–27
²⁶ When the Advocate arrives — the one I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes out from the Father — he will give evidence about me. ²⁷ You give evidence about me too, since you’re on my side from the start.

John 16:7–11
⁷ It’s to your advantage that I’m leaving. If I didn’t go, the Advocate would not come to you, but if I go I will send him to you. ⁸ And his coming will set out the case against the world, the matter of what’s wrong, what’s right, and who is responsible:
⁹ about what’s wrong, because they certainly did not give me allegiance;
¹⁰ about what’s right, because I am going to the Father and you see me no more;
¹¹ about who is responsible, because this world’s ruler is judged responsible.
