God, the Light, Shines in New Jerusalem

Revelation 21:23, “the city has no need of the sun or of the moon that they should shine in it, for the glory of God illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.” God, the light is within the Lamb, the lamp; because they are the constitution of New Jerusalem, the whole city shines with “the glory of God” (Rev. 21:11).

The Triune God—the Father as the light of life, the Son as the tree of life, and the Spirit as the river of life—is the triune enjoyment of the New Jerusalem. The light of the New Jerusalem is the redeeming God. God as the light shines from within the Lamb as the lamp through the New Jerusalem as the diffuser (Rev. 21:23-25, 11; 22:5). God as light was once unapproachable (1 Tim. 6:16), but now He has been made approachable by becoming the redeeming Lamb. In the New Jerusalem there will be no night, God Himself will shine continuously.*

New JerusalemGod in the Lamb as the light now lives in us; hence, we “are now light in the Lord” and should “walk as children of light” (Eph. 5:8). Furthermore, we believers together are His Body, the church in many places, described in Revelation as lampstands (Rev. 1:12, 13, 20; 2:1). We as the churches are not the source of light; we uphold it as lampstands to radiate God in Christ. These lampstands are forerunners of the eternal lampstand, New Jerusalem.
