God Laughs at Rebellion: Prayer from Psalm 2
In a world where powers plot and rage against divine order, Psalm 2 invites us to join in God’s perspective of sovereign laughter and find true refuge. This ancient royal psalm reshapes our prayers from anxious reaction to confident submission to the Anointed One. Discover how embracing its truths can anchor your prayer life in God’s unshakeable kingship amid modern chaos.
Why are the nations in tumult, and the peoples plotting in vain? The kings of the earth stand ready, and the princes conspire together against the Lord and against his anointed king. ‘Let us break their fetters,’ they cry, ‘and throw off their chains.’
He who dwells in heaven laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he speaks to them in anger, and in fury he terrifies them: ‘I have set my king on Zion, my holy mountain.’ I shall tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to me, ‘You are my son; this day I have begotten you. Ask of me and I shall give you the nations as your domain, the ends of the earth as your possession. You will break them with an iron sceptre, shatter them like a potter’s vessel.’ Now therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you earthly rulers. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice before him with trembling. Kiss the son, lest he be angry and you perish in the way; for his anger is quickly kindled. Happy are all who find refuge in him.
Background
Psalm 2 stands among the royal psalms of the Hebrew Bible, likely composed for the coronation or enthronement festival of a Davidic king in Jerusalem. Historically, it reflects the volatile geopolitics of the ancient Near East, where small kingdoms like Israel faced pressure from larger powers—Egypt, Assyria, or local coalitions—that tested new monarchs. It may echo real threats during David’s consolidation of power or later reigns, grounding the text in the lived experience of a people whose security hinged on covenant loyalty rather than military superiority.
