Deborah on Film
Deborah is one of the most remarkable women in the Hebrew Bible. She is the only woman in the Old Testament who was involved in a military struggle to deliver her people from oppression. As a prophetess, judge, and leader, she summoned the tribes of Israel to battle against the Canaanites and led them to victory. Despite her remarkable story, no major film or documentary has ever been made about her life and ministry.
I recently had the privilege of contributing an essay on Deborah to the Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception, Volume 6, edited by Hans-Josef Klauck, Volker Leppin, Bernard McGinn, Choon-Leong Seow, Hermann Spieckermann, Barry Dov Walfish, and Eric J. Ziolkowski, published by De Gruyter in 2012 (pp. 1122–1131). My contribution focused specifically on the representation of Deborah in film.
In that essay, I noted that the one notable exception to Deborah’s absence from the screen is a 12-minute segment that appeared in a DVD series called “People of Faith,” produced by Ikonographics in 1998 and distributed by Franciscan Communications. This video was part of a broader series of studies on biblical characters. In it, Deborah is portrayed in the full range of her biblical roles — prophetess, judge, wife, charismatic leader, advisor, and decision-maker who called the tribes of Israel together to lead them into battle against the Canaanites.
The video also carries a strong pedagogical purpose. At the end of the segment, children are encouraged to follow Deborah’s example by standing against injustice and advocating for the rights of those who are oppressed.
Deborah’s story deserves far greater attention from filmmakers. Her courage, leadership, and faith make her one of the most compelling figures in the entire biblical narrative, and her example remains as relevant today as it was in ancient Israel.
